The nature of this map basically belongs to the current vegetation map, including natural vegetation and agricultural vegetation. The legend of natural vegetation is arranged according to seven vegetation formations, which are mainly divided according to the appearance of plant communities and certain ecological characteristics. The concept of agricultural vegetation community, like the natural plant community, also has a certain life form (appearance, structure, layer), species composition and certain ecological section.
In 1990, the State Key Laboratory of resources and environmental information system, Institute of geography, Chinese Academy of Sciences completed the digitization of the map, and wrote relevant data description documents. After digitization, the data can also be transformed into other projections by using GIS software
This data includes a vector file in E00 format, design description of Chinese vegetation code, data set description, attribute data table of vegetation data layer and scanned vegetation map of the people's Republic of China brief description.

In the process of drawing up the legend and mapping, the vast majority of vegetation survey data (including maps and text data) after 1949 in China were consulted, and more than ten cartographic seminars attended by relevant researchers inside and outside the Institute were held. During the development and arrangement period after the completion of the mapping work, many new investigation data were added, especially the vegetation data in Western Tibet.
